Four Sea Island Golf Instructors Honored on America’s 50 Greatest Teachers List Sea Island becomes only golf facility to employ four of the top 50 golf instructors. SEA ISLAND, GA (07/02/09) – This week, Sea Island Golf Club became the only golf facility in the U.S. to employ four of the top 50 golf instructors, when Jack Lumpkin, Todd Anderson, Gale Peterson and Mike Shannon landed on Golf Digest’s 50 Greatest Teachers list. Additionally, Sea Island golf instructor Jared Zak was named to the list of top 20 teachers who are under 40 years of age. “At Sea Island, we have always fostered a commitment to instruction and we are pleased our instructors’ talents have been recognized on such a distinguished list,” said Bill Jones III, chairman and CEO of Sea Island Company. “Golfers will not find a more talented team of instructors than the team we have here at Sea Island.” A veteran of the Top 50 list, Jack Lumpkin is the senior director of instruction at Sea Island. He was recently inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame and worked for many years in the Golf Digest Schools (1976–2000). Lumpkin was also honored as the 1995 PGA Teacher of the Year and selected as the number one teacher in Georgia by Golf Digest in 2000. As a player, Lumpkin competed in the U.S. Amateur and on the PGA Tour, in three U.S. Opens, and the PGA Championship. He currently works with touring professionals Davis Love III, Donna Andrews, and Vaughn Taylor, as well as numerous players vying for the opportunity to play on the PGA tour. Also returning to Golf Digest’s Top 50 Greatest Teachers list is Todd Anderson, the director of instruction for the Sea Island Golf Learning Center. A PGA professional since 1987, Anderson is a contributing teacher for Golf Magazine, as well as one of Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 Teachers.” Professionals of the four major U.S. Golf Tours rely on Anderson to improve their games, including Brandt Snedeker, Charles Howell III, Davis Love III, Charles Warren, Brett Quigley, Dudley Hart, Jimmy Walker, Bob Heintz and Tadd Fujikawa. One of only a handful of female instructors returning to the Top 50 list, Gale Peterson has provided private and group instruction at Sea Island since 1978. A member of PGA and LPGA, Gale has also been selected on numerous occasions by Golf Magazine as one of the “100 Greatest Teachers.” New to the list this year is Sea Island’s putting short game expert Mike Shannon, a.k.a. “King Putt.” Shannon combines his teaching talents with the newest technology to help golfers improve their short game. Shannon’s proprietary, multi-level Laser Optics Putting Improvement System® is currently employed by more than 100 players on the Tour. He was named as a Top Teacher in Golf Magazine from 2000 to 2003. Shannon’s client list includes Steve Lowery, Joe Durant, Heath Slocum, Jeff Overton, Nicholas Thompson, Tadd Fujikawa, Casey Wittenburg, Jason Dufner, Jason Bohn and Jeff Klauk. Sea Island golf instructor Jared Zak was identified as an “instructor to watch” on Golf Digest’s Top 20 Under 40 list. Zak, who began teaching at Sea Island in 1999, is a PGA member and a graduate of the Professional Golf Management program at Mississippi State University.
